    hello again,
i found a couple of wine-tasting cups (tastevins, i've learned).
they're identical (including the three marks) to one i see on ebay.
the ebay listing, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nice-VINTAG...543475?hash=item2cae29e9f3:g:HC8AAOSwvU5XNMkn, calls it "silver" and asks for, what i would think, is a silver-like price.
however, i can't find the marks anywhere, and i've read about "made for tourist" pieces that put a few meaningless marks on to add "something."
can anyone tell me what i have? again, the two i have are exact in every way to the ebay entry, other than the fact that the three marks are in a different order on one of mine.
i'm sure all three are reproductions, but i'd still like to know something about them. i know nothing right now. they're not magnetic. i do know that much. they seem to be very well made and are like the ebay entry says, "nice." haha.
    thanks,
    chuck

What are your marks or can you get a photo of yours? The Ebay listing to me looks like a crown, a star, and a Maltese cross however they describe one as a fleur-de-lis.

    I'm sure someone will know.

Interesting. The seller claims 18th century, but what they show of the "marks" bear no resemblance to any of the marks used before the 1790's in France. Convenient, since finding online information on such marks is rare. Here's a link to the only page I know of (not that others might not exist) with illustrations and explanations of French silver marking for that period.

Finding one item for that period would be unusual. Finding multiples is definitely a red flag in my humble opinion.

    thanks everyone,
i, too, saw the finding of two matching tastevins a red flag. plus they are in very good condition. just some tarnish on 10% or less.
i thought the ebay seller's language seemed ambiguous, implying that it may have come from the 1800s. or a style from then.
also strange, there is no fleur-de-lis on the back of mine. and no fleur-de-lis on theirs from what i can see in their images. they say it didn't photograph well. but i would think you could see something if they could even make a guess of a fleur-de-lis.
the three marks that can be seen in their images are exactly the same as mine. exactly. i couldn't make a better image.
so, that leaves me with the question: what do i have?
reproductions? old reproductions? new and plentiful reproductions?
maybe it's impossible to know, but i'd appreciate any wild speculation or educated guesses.
    thanks again,
    chuck

I've looked high and low since this morning and have been unable to find anything that would help you, chucktell.

I know lots of things they aren't, but nothing to go on for what they are.

    thanks bakersgma,
i very much appreciate your efforts.
maybe i'll take them to a silver shop and find out what they're made of.
