    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Oooooooh, hankies that old (WWII) can be found still? That WOULD be a fun find.

and older. The fancy stuff people bought as "gift" items or to carry as part of a wedding ensemble didn't get much wear. I still have great-grandma's tatted one around somewhere.

I just wanted to say, I am not an expert on vintage hankies or linens at all. I am still learning all the time. I have had some good success with vintage hankies on etsy.

Gila, you probably know this already, but when you search ebay, do the completed search where you see what sold and how much each sold for to get a real understanding of what sells and the current price points.

For me the hardest part of selling hankies is taking good pics as many are thin cotton. The easiest part is packing them up for shipping. :)
No packing peanuts, no bubble wrap, no breakage possible like with glassware and pottery. Plus the shipping is not pricey because they are light.

It can be a nice profitable niche to explore.
    :)

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I do know that, Pearls but I only discovered it earlier this year!

The eBay tutorials are helpful too. There are a few websites I'm going to read, plus Martha Stewart had a very nice video on YouTube with a visit from a lady who wrote the 'definitive book' on hankies, according to Martha. Interesting hobby. Hankies go back centuries but the vast majority we see now are WWII to mid 1960s. Not many made after that but supposedly making a comeback? Learning about hand-rolled, handkerchief linen, scallops.

I doubt I'll collect but I just want to be able to know some basics about... everything!

They would be ideal to have, as far as storage, postage, etc.
I have a feeling natural sunlight (yes, for only a nano-second) would make for good photos. I wonder.

    Thanks!

I have SO many old hankies, and not a one of them is on display... I always think I should do something about that, but so far, I haven't, and they remain in bunches of plastic bags in my lingerie chest.

When I was a kid, it was considered "proper" to carry a hankie in one's purse when going to church on Sunday. (Not that I ever actually USED one, but hey, they were just so nice to HAVE!) I have embroidered ones, printed ones, ones with tatted edges - flowers, holiday themes, nursery rhymes - you name it! Some were mine, some my Mom's, and some my Grandma's.

One of these days, I'm going to have to do something with them. I just haven't yet figured out WHAT!

    Anybody have any ideas?

I'm sure others do what I am going to write about but . . .

Whenever I go to a funeral I always include an "extra" cotton/linen "lady's" handkerchief in my black "funeral purse" just in case a woman beside or near me needs a handkerchief. It is my "gift" to whomever I hand a handkerchief at a funeral.

SBSVC - vintage hankies make very pretty quilt tops.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

What a wonderful series of posts!
Well, here is my sole hankie... it was sent to me by dear tyeldom3, along with the weird bird effigy/totem from another thread a while back. She knew I crave birdzszszszsz. Isn't it just beautiful?
Look how delicate and transparent it is. The stitches are so tiny that I had to get my magnifying glass to see them.
You can get a bigger picture by clicking on it for a Photobucket view.

Men's (new) hankies are not to be used by him but to give away to someone in need...usually to a girl/woman for a man should have his own.
This is usually when dressed finely so as to carry/display such a part of his accoutrements.

I'm a hankie hoarder, probably have a couple of hundred stashed away, all different types, and some that were mine as a child, several made by my grandmother, Mom, and my aunt. Have been gathering pics of hankie quilts for years, intending to make one, but that may be a pipe dream at this stage... If I do, will probably be a butterfly quilt similar to the one below, the hankies are just folded and tucked, then appliquéd - like the idea that they're still intact.

Years ago, used to make little baby bonnets from lace-edged hankies, had a little verse that went along with them, but my memory fails me at the moment...

IIRC, a lady's wedding hankie was often used to make the christening bonnet for the first baby.

YES, Evelyb! My grandmother's wedding hankie was actually turned into the little bonnet that my Mom, my sisters & I, and both of my own kids wore at our/their christenings!

Works either way - the bonnets I made were given to the baby, the hankie was later used as the 'something old' for the bride when the child married...
