I'm new here so thanks very much for having me. I am an archaeologist so may be able to help identify some smaller things posted on here.
I don't have a clue about things like furniture. A friend gave me these chairs. I wondered if anyone knows when they were made. I'm guessing fairly recently. Thinking of reupholstering them.
    Many thanks in advance everyone.

What are the front casters made from? The furniture people would like to see the underneath with close ups of joints, screws etc which will help determine when they were made.

Thanks very much for your advice. The castors are ceramic I think. I'll post more photos.

To be honest it looks like they've just been stuck together! I'm not holding out much hope for these being of any age!

If you can still edit your original post, it would be wonderful if you could click on "full image" so we don't have to click on the thumbnails. TY

They could be pinned together with wooden pegs but there would be visible evidence of that. Have a good look underneath, ah I see there is newer scrim/ hessian from the newer pictures. Any screws will be underneath the scrim. From the casters I would hazard a guess at Victorian or Edwardian but wait for the more knowledgeable furniture people to have a look.

Thank you. Gosh...that's specific. If you don't mind me asking, how do you know this? Is it just the style?

You might want to strip off the old peeling varnish which is giving them a patchy look. They are chairs I would be happy to have in my home too with a bit of tweaking!

Yes I was thinking of doing that before doing the upholstery. I do like them though they are so uncomfortable at the moment as there's next to no filling in the seats.

I was going to say late Victorian, early Edwardian.
You can get filling from old mattresses.
Put it in a pillowcase first and wash it, gets rid of old dried out bodily fluids :D

Agree with Ghopper turn of century - pre WWI

Two castors on front and not on back.
    Type of castors
Style and way the wood carving was done.
    Front legs.

I think that some one stripped these and then put polyurethane or something similar on it. Looks like the kind of thing that was done in the 1970s/80s.
The finish doesn't look original. It looks shiny. They should have a warm patina.
