It's a very white, translucent china and may have been worth restoring -- or perhaps someone was just practising. It's about 6 inches across. Thanks.

It looks like Japanese Seto porcelain, late 19th, early 20th century, but I do not know the mark.

    Hi,
My great uncle was from France and was a
"stapler". He repaired many famous pieces but everyday stuff also. My Gram had a favorite coffee cup that smashed into six pieces. Uncle Melie stapled it together and Gram used it for years. The man could do amazing things. The best was he repaired a window pane in the hen house with six staples. I think it was 45 cents to replace it but he repaired it.

I remember finding a plate that had been stapled also. I wish I had kept it.
I think things like this are great examples of people being frugal, not wasteful as
    we seem to be today.

Stapling wasn't easy to do without power tools, someone thought a lot of this plate to repair it or pay some one else to do it.

There are collector's of stapled porcelain/china. I've sold a piece or two over the years.

Just so you know, the bird is called Howo Bird. Some people call it Flying Turkey.

Refreshing.. these days nothing is repaired, because everything is "use this till it breaks..soon and get a new one.. sooner".

If you do a search for Phoenix Bird China, you should be able to find quite a bit.
    Japanese.
Very thin translucent china, I would guess at 1890s - 1930s.

As already mentioned, people collect staple repair items, both glass and porcelain.

I am a fan of repairs. Thanks for the responses. I spent a long while Googling "Seto", "bird", etc, after Mat's post -- all very informative. I have a heap to learn from you all. Thanks again. (Perhaps I've uploaded a repaired chamberpot handle? It was a favourite till the dogs smashed it into Super Glue territory.)

Fantastic, khl889. Amazing that you were able to find an example, too. Does it have any value, do you think, apart from the staples?

It's worth selling certainly but it's probably not a high value item.

(By the way, don't let the romanization in that link suggest his name is Itaku Tomesuke; those three words actually mean "consigned Tomesuke vase." But as with many Japanese potters, there seems to be a line of Tomesukes over a few generations.)

I'll hang onto it, thanks khl889. I doubt it would make $5 at a Sydney market. Would you be so kind as to look at my Satsuma vase? I've no great expectations but am curious.
