When I posted pictures of my crockery, I didn't include these as I figured they were nothing special.

They are 5 7/8" in diameter. the taller ones are 4 7/8" tall, the short one is 3 3/4" tall.

They probably still aren't anything special, but as I brought them up from the basement, I noticed something. My great grandfather's initials on the bottom of them, and at least two of the three dated 1936.

    So my questions are:

How much older than 1936 are they, and what would these particular crocks have been used for that my g-grandfather would have initialed and dated them?

Maybe he brought them to a fair or party or event and wanted them to be returned.

Was 1936 the date of the event, or was it an expiration date?

That would make perfect sense. They did sell butter at the farmer's market, so I'm sure they had plenty of their own to bring wherever...

Expiration dates were not used back in 1936. That is a modern innovation.
I think sometime in the early 1980s.
