Depends on the ship's size and the strength/leverage needed to manipulate hundreds of feet of rope/cable. This takes even more effort in a storm or emergency maneuvering.
Most ships have port and starboard steering gear especially warships for obvious reasons.
My first ship was 592' long and her helm/wheel was about 4-5' in diameter.

Most people would never have a clue that it wasn't an actual nautical item so it would look good there.

I meant to say that I have been aboard newer navy ships and they no longer have such beautiful things. :(
Steering is by computer now and a little tiny horizontal toy of a wheel maybe 3" in diameter. :p
Hydraulics or electric motors take the load of moving the rudder(s).

Oh, please don't worry! Even I am not getting answers for some my items, but I am having fun here. But I am absolutely sure, that if Item is "nothing" we should be told and instead of searching again and again - we will just give this "nothing" to donation.

I'm afraid I don't have any info on this item, just wanted to say that I too, have bad luck with answers. If I make a thread asking for i go, only about 50% of the time do I actually get an answer.

I think after 2-3 cocktails people tiki bar will like everything, but after 4-5 cocktails, tiki bar people already don't care what is there in tiki bar, and after 6-7 cocktails tiki bar people already don't remember where they are and what tiki bar IS..:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Maybe because you are very .... serious at the picture..... :joyful::joyful::joyful:
Actually if we or anybody else didn't get answer, we should not "complain", because it is just a forum and we already should be appreciated if would get answers even only for some our question. Isn't it? My "whining" post was just a joke....

Reviewing your posts, they seem to be mostly relating to cameras and do seem to have had replies. It may well be that few members have anthing to contribute when it comes to photography. Titles that are specific help, sometimes I for one just skip the vague, and am so far behind on the finds thread I don't look at it.

I would disagree. I believe I have only made 2 or 3 posts about cameras. And only 2 of them were questions. I realize all 3 of them could be considered questions, except 2 are the same because one did not receive answers.

Wanttoknow, I was not aware this was a "whining" post, and I wasn't trying to complain, I was simply trying to sympathize.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

IMHO, I personally think someone went to a lot of trouble or effort to make something either decorative or maybe religious ..... look at those "spindles".....much too delicate to withstand any kind of pressure as in heavy weather......also look at the grooves in all of the outer portions of each of those spindles....what went around each of them...maybe connecting them???....that obviously isn't there now......or were they JUST decorative......it certainly is perplexing!!!!! And NOT new!!!!!!! But I too do not have an answer!!!!

It is so interesting look at the details of this wheel in person! There is hole in the middle in square shape and it means this wheel was sitting on some square shape poll and was using for rotating "something"

If the shaft were round the wheel would fail it's use at some point.
The square was a key thing for me and who's to say some boat owner didn't make it or have this made custom.

If you will look at the "front of wheel" in the middle ring with "square" shape hole is some wear. This wear from the pin (? I don't know how call it in English). The wheel was sitting onto square shape poll and "blocked" with some "pin" and because of a lot using there is wear at the wood. :cyclops: DSC01579 (2).JPG DSC01579.JPG
Edit: or maybe the wheel was sitting onto some "T" looking part...... DSC01579 (2) - Copy.JPG

Shank or shaft would be acceptable descriptions.
Then there's a 'key' to keep them from rotating.
