Straw / reed mat history and origin?

    Attention ruggies, carpetty people (and maybe Asia-experts)!

    Where (and when) do reed mats like this originate or is this just a western contemporary take on the much thicker Tatami mat?

    This is a very new rug but the history of its kind is what I'm interested in.

    Looks like a sisal mat to me. Modern, functional... nothing special.

    It's actually made of reed, not sisal.
