Needlepoint and a Rosary

I suppose I could’ve put these in the Finds Thread, but I wasn’t really looking for these.

Sadly, a friend lost his wife to pancreatic cancer a week before Christmas. He asked me to help sort the wheat from the chaff of her china, crystal and what nots. He said, “Take what you want.” I really didn’t want to take anything, but he wanted to used the frame that the needlepoint was in for something else, and the rosary looked like it had been well used at one time, and seemed too personal to give to the thrift.

I’m a sucker for needlework. I think that this is not a sampler from 1869, but perhaps a pattern that was made the mid-third of the 20th c., but others may be able to enlighten me further. 16.5 inches by 19.5 inches. Also, it seems to have been attacked by moths as there are several “repairs” to it. :(

I know nothing about the rosary or rosaries in general. The beads appear to be blue glass, the medallion silver coating over copper which has mostly worn off and the cross, silver coating over a gold coloured metal — maybe brass, but it is quite light.

I dunno what I’m going to do with these things, but for some reason, I couldn’t leave them to the thrift...:angelic:

I’m in Canada. However, the mother of the friend who passed away lived in the UK before emigrating to Canada. I believe these items may be hers.

Well, if you go to the Latter Day Saints' geneaology web site, familysearch.org, you'll find a couple Esther Cottiers who would fit that date. Don't know why it wouldn't be what it purports to be not terribly knowledgable about samplers.

I've a very similar rosary which was my grandmother's. I think it's just pre WW2.

A lot of antique samplers have been reproduced and sold as charts and/or kits, name and all. A quick google search doesn't show any reproductions with that name... so it may be genuine...
A few close-ups and a photo of the back could be helpful. :)

Thank you, OBB, that fits in with belonging to her mom.

Well, I thought some of the colours were more 20th c. than 19th, but I’ll post some close ups and the back a little later. Thanks!

Thanks, Debora. It may be that Cottier is a family name. I was thinking a kit because of the religious quote — her mom was quite religious.

The text comes from the hymn How loving is Jesus, Who came from the sky by Randall H. Ballantyne that was published in 1842.

How loving is Jesus who came from the sky,
    In tenderest pity for sinners to die;
His hands and His feet were nailed to the tree,
And all this He suffer’d for you and for me.

Thank you, Debora! Would’ve been well-known, then, when the original sampler was created.

The Esther Cottiers I can find that would match those dates are either from Isle of Man or Liverpool.

That looks like needlepoint and I'd think those are post-1900 colors. They're artificial and wouldn't have been available in the 1860s, specifically the purple, the blue and the red. A lot of this work was done in the 1980s and my guess is it was done then.

I now see what you mean about the colors, LOL!
Yep, a more modern reproduction. But pretty!
