At least you can go through that list one at a time matching up styles - plus, you have provenance now, and that's a good thing!

My next move would be to try and match up subject matter, medium and SIZE.

Usually there will be other works of the same size known.

Good luck, perseverance is your friend now - this might take some time but eventually you will identify the work. It is obviously a quality piece.

Here's a group dedicated to Pre-Raphaelite scholarship. Perhaps you could contact them and see if they could help. I suspect that someone with expertise in the field would be able to identify artist even if minor member of movement.

The National Gallery of Art obtained a copy of the auction catalog for me, I am going to go through it and post a list of possible artists. Many of the paintings are easy to eliminate because of the titles. Hopefully we can figure it out.

IMG_0855.jpg I went through the auction catalog, I found a painting titled "A Lady of Old Augsburg" by Max Von Schmaedel. Above is an example of his work and my painting.

There are many similarities, aren't there? Do you know if it's on wood? Difficult to compare without having both in front of one. My gut says no but I can't support that in any way. Let's see what others think.

Here's another work of his (Max Von Schmaedel) and it could be the same model. What do you think?

Here's the details of the above. Note it's on panel. You'll want to compare size to size of yours.

    Artist:
    Max von Schmaedel
    (German, born 1856)
    Title:
A bust length portrait of a girl in period dress
    Medium:
    Oil on Panel
    Size:
    20.3 x 15.2 cm. (8 x 6 in.)

It just occurred to me that the other number burned into the back of my panel, W/7698 probably is a Henry Wallis gallery inventory number. I am wondering if I might be able to find gallery records or an inventory of his estate. Does anyone have any experience doing that, for instance through a genealogy database like Ancestry?

Ancestry will not help you. I just looked for estate records for Henry. The only record available is the notation in National Probate List that his estate was probated in early February 1917, with administration granted to The Public Trustee. Value was listed at 15900+ pounds sterling but there is no breakdown.

The art dealer Henry Wallis died Brixton, London 15-Oct-1890 Born 1805
I think your record is for the artist, Henry Wallis, died 1916.

Sorry, I'm not sure why I picked up the wrong date and therefore the wrong Henry. But Ancestry will still not be of any help in identifying the contents of an estate in England in that time frame.
