I need help identifying an old chair

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by JustSomeGuyOnTheInternet, May 27, 2016.

  1. Hi, I have an old chair that I know nothing about, and I was hoping maybe somebody here could help me identify it. I'm not sure how old it is or if it's worth anything. (I don't know anything about antiques, chairs, or antique chairs.) I've included a picture of the chair and the tag on the bottom.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Just realized the dates on the tag are in the 1920s, so this chair is more vintage than antique, still hoping to find some help here though. Thanks.

With that label it's not yet a "true antique," being made sometime post-1929. But I would think even later than that. EDIT - Now I see you've noticed the dates.

    Welcome, someguy!

Wouldn't the absence of zip code or the prior zone code (on the label) date it to 1955 or earlier?

Didn't mean to imply that the chair had to be 70's, just that BWHC made furniture for hospital settings. I'm not sure how the labels changed over the year, not having any upholstered furniture older than about 10 years in the house, but you do have point about the zip code - 1963ish, though, not the 50's.

I never would have pegged this as a 1920s chair.
    My first thought was 1970s.

Question is when was polyether foam first used in seat cushions?

    Gila
Zip codes became common use in 1963.

I don't think those are patent dates. Rather dates that different states adopted an act regulating something.

I would think post-WWII, Pat. Funny that the regulations mentioned are 1929, but that may just be the tag requirement rule.

    History
*Otto Bayer and his coworkers at IG Farben in Leverkusen, Germany, first made polyurethanes in 1937. Early work focused on the production of fibres and flexible foams and PUs were applied on a limited scale as aircraft coating during World War II. Polyisocyanates became commercially available in 1952, and production of flexible polyurethane foam began in 1954 using toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyester polyols. These materials were also used to produce rigid foams, gum rubber, and elastomers. Linear fibers were produced from hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO).
