What ( from where and from when) I have here? The metal doesn't attract the magnet. May it be Anglo-Indian metalwork, or something totally different ? I would be grateful for any trail.

There are only numbers at the bottom 88 and 78, but I will try to find more. Thank you!

I'm curious about what appears to be red velvet fabric inside the lid. Seems strange for a tea caddy.

Yes, I also thought about it. Velvet looks old and it's whole frayed, but maybe I will try to look behind.

With the velvet; it does seem unlikely as a tea caddy. Strikes me as possibly something for a specific religious storage use or perhaps a jewelry "casket" - although it would be hard to get your hand in it to retrieve anything.

Is there a possibility it was glued later? This is how it looked under 20200112_202453_resize_99.jpg

That had passed through my mind. Is it just raw edges? If it is; then it may have been added later rather than original. My thought is that if it was original; that it would have probably been padded and had hidden raw edges.

Not a tea caddy , as it does not seal tight when closed. Silverplate?

I have no idea, but probably yes. Omitting the stamped numbers at bottom, there are no marks.
