Best place to sell Chinese antiques?

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Matthew Bunting, May 24, 2016.

  1. Hello,

I have a 19th Century Chinese food carrier I'm looking to sell. However I'm having difficulty finding anywhere to sell it.

It's a very interesting item. And possibly quite valuable as I've had valuations put it anywhere between £200 and £750.

Does anyone know any good dealers or other places to sell Chinese antiques?

    I'm based in the uk

    Thanks

What does it look like? Any photos? If it's what I'm thinking it is, it'll probably sell pretty fast, regardless.

Have you tried ebay? Truly good Chinese items find ready buyers on ebay. Be prepared to sell and ship to China. I have no idea whether or not this item is scarce or valuable but the buyers will know. Here are the top sales for Chinese baskets on ebay. There are many dissimilar items in the list but some food baskets interspersed. I am not seeing any quite like yours.

Found this similar basket that failed to sell at $50.00. Your expectations may not be in line with the market.

This one in the UK is priced more in line with your expectations. Remember that asking price may not be reflective of true value or ultimate selling price. My guess is that these are valued more in the UK as a decorative novelty than elsewhere. This is a market that is difficult to tap in to, requiring a high end retail location and a clientele to match.

There is a lot more on alibaba for much less. They all come pre beat up.

  8. Thank you for the replies they are helpful. I'm getting the impression that the dealers that said £750 may have over valued it a bit then!

I think I will go back to them and see if I can persuade them to purchase it if they value you it that highly. If not I will try ebay for a few hundred
