I guess...? The lid is like of a normal cookie jar. The lid doesn't have a compartment to put a sponge in. The inside is dirty, the bottom has some stuff that looks like really old glue or something. I wouldn't put cigars on the inside if it was this dirty, but I don't know if the previous owner put food in it or something lol.

It could be just a container that has multi purpose uses. But I agree that it looks Asian or mid eastern. The stone look like they are real and from the pictures it looks old.

Relatively modern Asian import. Not sure where from exactly but remember seeing similar in the import stores.

    It is from Tibet. Beautiful.
It looks like a very nice 'tongba', a drinking vessel for hot millet beer. Like a cross between a beer mug and a tea mug.;) I am not exactly sure it is a tongba, because the ones I have seen are rather plain and have a hole in the lid for a straw. But it is the same shape and size.
It has age, but it is not antique imo.

The metal could be (low grade) silver, maybe you can have it tested.
The stones are Tibetan turquoise, and what looks like carnelian. The colours blue and red stand for balance between the male and femal principles, heaven and earth, etc. Much like the Chinese yin and yang.

Is it possible it may have contained Betal nut for chewing ? Is that lime in the bottom ? I have no clue if they imported or chewed betel nut in Tibet, it was however , the first thing that came to my mind . Possibility or no ?

They didn't.:) I think drinking a tongba filled with hot millet beer could have a similar result though. With less staining of the teeth.:yuck:
