3A24C6B1-2D32-48EF-AB67-211D98AED27A.jpeg Hi all! I’m a lover of all things iridescent, and today while I was at a vintage swap meet these caught my eye. It’s not carnival glass, and it’s not electroplated mermaid metal, but it’s extremely light glass. I did a little research and all I could find was vintage, art nouveau, Art Deco...no direction on the maker. Is anyone familiar with these or what year they were made? I also apologize for the picture being on it’s side. For the life of me I can’t figure out how to make it stand up.

    "electroplated mermaid metal" :hilarious:

It appears that there are words? on the side of these mugs? What do they say?

No words or marks of any kind. Drives me crazy when that happens!

Silver fade? It was an effect from the '60s, I think, but had a revival when the TV series Mad Men was on.

Great tip thank you! I love new things to check out. I didn’t find anything under the silver fade vein, except a piece of vintage Disney collectibles. Nothing with the metallic blues with the silver insides of the set. But I now have something else I’ll be looking for at the vintage fairs.

It's a variant on mercury glass.

I have always understood "mercury"glass to be a double walled glass with silver halide in the space between the wall creating the "mercury"(silver) effect. To me these look blown with the irridesecent effect in th glass.

Good question. I was just quoting the OP who used the term in her introduction, so I guess we should ask her.

They might be double-walled and silvered, possibly blown with iridized glass or heat-struck afterwards? It's hard to say without actually handling one of them. I find sleuthing glass decorating effects fascinating. There probably isn't any other material that lends itself to such a variety of hot and cold decorating techniques. I have a simple little colorless cruet, with the decorative elements impressed on the inside of it. I have not yet figured out how they did that!

That sounds beautiful! I love the different variants of glass. I started out collecting carnival glass but it soon branched out to just beautiful glass. I followed down the blown glass avenue and found a pair of similar mugs with that description. It also says that they are vintage to the 1980’s. I confess that gives my 80’s born self a bit of a twist at being vintage but there we are. :) Nothing further yet but it’s a start!
