I bought this at an auction thinking it was interesting and old. Later found it has a tag on back with "Patented August 31, 1880". Best I can tell it is an artic scene with dogsled, Eskimos and a ship. Plate appears to be either paper mache or a pressed paper composition. Any help out there? Has anyone seen these?

Hi and welcome! :) The photos will enlarge but I hope you don't mind if I insert them. The label seems to have Egyptian symbols so not sure if it's original to your plaque or not. Maybe it's the patent date for the hanger? Perhaps someone will know.

Would imagine the label is for the blank. Looks to be hand painted but I can't tell for sure from this photo. Arctic exploration was a big topic in the late 19th century. Consequently, it was a subject for just a few paintings. You don't give size and whether it is an original or a print are important details necessary in evaluating.

The size is 9" and thanks for the info. So possibly it was a kit for painting and I'll see what else I can find.

Probably not a kit. It would have been a blank for painting on much like one would buy prepared canvases and canvas-board. The tag and round board is somewhat inconsequential to the painting. Any signature?
