The item I have owned the longest is this jug I bought at an auction when I was in 6th grade (1958). Inside was an entry for our local county fair from 1923 when the jug won a blue ribbon for the oldest item exhibited. Said to be at least 100 years old at that time.

I also have my great-grandmother's spice cabinet. It was made as a wedding gift for her in 1882. I have owned it since 1968. It used to sit on a shelf but George made this table as a way to display it.

Spikes go in drinks? Appropriate, since my father was more of a hard core addict. Alas, there's no 12 step for rail fans....

I pull mine out for holiday dinners, too! My tableware doesn't match, but it's a lot of fun!

My grandmother used to get a Union Pacific calendar every year from my great-uncle, who used to work for them. I found one in cleaning up my mom's estate, and just have to keep it. :)

    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

when I first started picking/collecting 25 years ago , i found an 1898/1899 postage stamp preserver (it has 2 calendars in it ) from the Stanley House in Truro N.S., it had a couple of trade stamps in it , one was cut in half , as i researched it i found out it was perfectly normal to use half a stamp , it is framed downstairs in a box, and the stamps in my book .
i bought a post card off ebay of the Stanley house (late 1800's) to go with it

My dining table, circa 1780. Bought by my parents when they married, so I'd count it as being "owned" by me almost as long.

It's probably buried under yet another collection, rather like mine. My table however is over 100 years newer, and probably not a well made.

I have a large pitcher originally from a wash set that my oldest sister gave me 40 years ago. It looks just like this one, but without the transfer print.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Vic...543895?hash=item541f5e9057:g:GHMAAOSw3xJVX30g

It belonged to her first husband's great-grandparents who I knew as Mammy & Pappy. I remember making Kool-Aid in it as a child because to me it was just a large pitcher. :D

She was afraid if the horse's patoot she was married to ever found out it had belonged to Harold's family it would end up in a million pieces. I was the only person who had any connection to it, so I became its custodian.

It is sad because there is no connection anymore & some day it will end up in box lot at an auction I am sure. :(

Most things eventually do go the way of the auction. I recently sold a vase my mom had, a piece I thought she had purchased in an antique store. It was hand painted mercury glass and too fragile and delicate to be placed anywhere but a very secure cabinet. After I had sent it off, I found a paper that said it had been a wedding gift to my great grandmother from her grandmother.

Ah well... At least whoever bought it will love it. And it would be far more heartbreaking if it broke under my care.
