Silverplate is always going to tarnish quicker than sterling. The only thing that would delay it is some sort of oil residue left on the surface which would retard sulfation.

These were shiny a year ago.

The line in the dark is the solder seam. It is a little lower silver content than the rest.

Maybe a silicone like Armorall would help.

 

Thanks @terry5732 -- I hadn't realised there was a difference in tarnish rate between sterling and plate. Explains a lot of things i've seen here at home. I have to admit you're getting longer out of your polishing than I am. I think it's time to try a few different products. Thanks for your help!

There is a huge difference. I have a sterling set of spoons that is 200 hundred year old. They need polish mainly every 10 YEARS. A a set from 1880s need polish every 5 years and lots of silver[Plate from the 1950s-80s that need polishing every MONTH.

Yellowing is the first stage of tarnish.Most cases are from environmental causes in your home,i.e. chlorides and sulfides in the air. Do you roast your own coffee beans,the fumes will oxidize silver faster than most other causes.
