Featured Carved horse head, Indian (India)?

I came across this carved piece. Has old paint on it, but carving from underneath shows there have been other paint layers. Looks like it was cut off of a larger carving, and the steel hook added later. Also remnants of a tag of some sort probably when first sold as a wall decoration. Wood is very dense. Grid is inch square. Looks like it may be from India to me, but that is really a guess. Any thoughts?

 

You are right, Jeff, it is Indian, from Rajasthan. It is beautiful.
These horses are supports for semi-closed balconies, can't think of the name in English now.

 

Amazing! Thank you bunches!! Sad that these are being cut off of old balconies, but at least it isn't an old temple.

 

Only to be replaced by new ones, the way it has been done for centuries.

 

Unfortunately, my experience is that the new ones are never as well made as the ones being replaced. Maybe that isn't true in India yet.

What's your gut feel on when this one would have been made?

 

It looks old but not antique to me. These were usually in pairs. Maybe the other one was damaged (termites, accident), and they replaced both.
