    This belongs to friend so I dont have it in hand,but have seen it, glass is curved and very thin, painting is flat and looks like opaque glass, you can see brush strokes under a loupe ivory`.jpg . unable to make out signature, but something like Frissions? I think it is Diana, and maybe 40,s, She thinks it is much older and maybe ivory, which I am certain it is not, She wants to sell it, but wants more information if possible about it bedore she does so

    It's VERY nice! and looks like painted on a thin sheet of ivory, as miniatures and small paintings were at times. :)

    {sorry, I didn't see your remark that it is not ivory, but why do you think not? and what else might it be?}

    Yes, she is likely Diana, goddess of the hunt.

    thank you, It just doesnt look like ivory to me, and 40,s was guess by frame, but of course it could be a frame from the 1800,s, It is a beautiful little pice whatever age it is, If it is on ivory it is much more valuable right? but could it be sold on Ebay?

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    Yes, Diana with one of her hounds, and she is gorgeous! That skin, and the drape of her topless tunic are beautiful. Good luck with the piece!

    Again, it's lovely! Did you notice the backboard is in French?

    This may not qualify by size, but it's common knowledge to collectors that miniatures were often painted on ivory, sellers just don't say it - or do. "Miniature painted on ivory antique" pulls up 51 items on eBay.

    Anyway, you can find more discussions on both of these threads.

    and
    3 bone/ivory framed miniature portraits

    Having said all that, it may be on celluloid. But maybe not, as it was used for lower end paintings according to this nice blog about miniatures:

    Being able to see through it, with striations in the material, I'm inclined to go with opaque glass.
    Once you have it in hand hold the back of the piece up to your face. Glass will be cold to the touch, bone will be warmer.
    I would think that bone would be denser so you wouldn't be able to see through it. Of course, I might be wrong.
