    Hello all,

I was gifted what I describe as an indian rope chair. I found some similar items online. Either there is no one accepted phrase to describe this chair, or I haven't yet found it. When I was gifted this chair, there was a back (very poorly) attached. I've since removed the few screws that joined the two. See the pictures of each, attached to this post.

Here appears to be a reproduction:

This is a similar chair with a similar back:

Importantly, it does not appear that the back was originally attached to this chair. When I received it, modern narrow metal hinges were screwed to both pieces, joining them together. There doesn't appear to be any remnant of original joinery. Neither piece appears to be altered. The finish on both pieces appears to be original.

Is this an actual antique or am I fooled? Can anyone help identify this piece? Is there an accepted description?

It's called a pida chair, doesn't look to have much age.

Any idea why the back is not permanently attached? Are these common?

If you search a bit, I think you will find some of these that are folding.

Thanks for your help everyone. So it seems that I do not have a rare antique from civilizations long dead. To ebay!
