Indeed, that wallpaper is beautiful. Its beauty made me want to "understand" the seeming juxtaposition (or evolution in art) of James Whistler. I noted that he did the peacocks in 1876-77 and his "Arrangement in Grey and Black" in 1871.

Below is a website discussing an exhibition of his work(s) at a museum.

    http://www.dia.org/exhibitions/whistlersite/grey.htm

"As was customary for a woman of her social class, Anna Whistler kept in touch with her family and friends through letters. Today, her correspondence is used by historians seeking to understand the social issues of the day, and by art historians who find her descriptions of her son’s work and life an invaluable resource."

"Following is an excerpt from a letter to her sister where she discusses sitting for her portrait:

“I was not as well then as I am now, but never distress Jemie [James] by complaints, so I stood bravely, two or three days, whenever he was in the mood for studying me as his pictures are studies, and I so interested stood as a statue! But realized it to be too great an effort, so my dear patient Artist who is gently patient as he is never wearying in his perseverance concluding to paint me sitting perfectly at my ease.”

Was at a local auction on Saturday that wasn't very well attended. Had a lot of vintage china, pottery, and glassware in large box lots. Filled up the back of my parent's pickup truck two deep in box lots for $65. My parents scored some nice deals as well. This is the kind of auction I enjoy, older stuff selling for rock bottom prices. A few of the highlights from my haul; stoneware jar, egg scale, three pieces of McCoy pottery, gasoline jar w/spout, cake plate, and a number pieces of cut glass.

Probably should have bought a lot more since everything was going really cheap.

A few things to show. All are thrift store finds. Some of the pics are not the best, as taken by the store as I took them in.

    This 50s-60s hassock was $5.00.
    stuff1212.jpg

This metal lamp was $5.00. I had the shade already.

I may have shown this wicker table a long time ago. It now has a fresh coat of paint and a new pine top. Don't remember exactly what I paid for this but believe it was under $10.00.

    stuff1210.jpg

This double door metal cabinet has a fresh coat of paint done with a dry-brush technique for a "shabby" look. Bought for $30.00.
    stuff1209.jpg

This is a large vintage print on fabric by MA artist Nelly Littlehale Murphy (1867-1941). Bought for $5.00.
    stuff1202.jpg

Pair of bronze bookends bought for $3.00.
    stuff1203.jpg

This is an oak carving fragment. Possibly 18th or early 19th century French. Framed in an oh so 70s manner. Bought for $3.00.

    stuff1204.jpg

This hand tooled clutch was in the trash at the thrift due to a torn cotton zipper. Couldn't let it get tossed but not sure what to do with it. About 12" long so maybe could re-purpose the leather some way.
    stuff1207.jpg

This 40s Elzac pottery and Lucite Bunnykins pin was a great find for $1.00.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Brad... love the fragment! As for the purse... would it cost much to have a new zipper put in?

    Loyd... love the whales!

I think all that lacing on the edges would have to be un-done to be able to put a new zipper in. The old zipper would also have to be ripped out. Once apart, a shoe repair place could probably sew a new zipper in. It would then need to be reassembled. A lot of labor involved but not all that hard to do. Unfortunately, once done, it would not be worth the investment in time and money. In this market, I would be lucky to get $20.00 for it. :( Ebay sales seem to mostly bear this out with just a few selling for more.......

    Hi all, I missed you!

I have been unusually tired for a long time, I figured I was just getting old, but If finally went to the doctor and she did blood tests. I have mono, so that's why I have been away..... I have been extremely tired trying to just get through the day.

So I am on the road to recover (it is amazing what a little rest can do), and here are some finds I haven't had time to photograph or post:

I don't know too much about these sterling vermeil earrings. I found them at a now out-of-business antique mall with the costume jewelry. They are big, heavy and clangy, and very much worth the $6 I paid. They have markings I can't make out on the ear hook part..... I am thinking Middle Eastern......

Thrift shop find, $4- Venetian glass necklace. One of the glass beads was split, I epoxy 6000ed it. I used to really be into older rhinestone jewelry, but my I find myself more drawn to the older glass jewelry now.

This was no bargain, but I really liked it and wear it a lot. I got it at the Philadelphia Flower Show in March, it is made from old flatware (sterling.)

This was an antique mall find, another $6 piece. This is heavy gold-filled Theda.

Brad, I love the rose lamp!!!

Bluemoon, congratulations on the Hermes scarf finds. I found only one in my lifetime, I gave it to my sister to sell (for some reason, I hate selling clothing......)

Here is a catalog I used to identify my scarf....have you seen this link?

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Welcome back! Gosh, I had mono in college... ummm... uhhh... don't they call that the "kissing flu"? Have you been being a playgirl, Marko????? :peeking::hilarious::bag:

LOL, no. It is unusual to get it more than once, but I did it. I had it in college in the 1990s, then again 7 years ago, and now again.....7 years ago was the worst.

@Marko the glass beads are Japanese; I forget the exact name, but that foiled glass is a giveaway. The earrings could be Israeli, Egyptian, Turkish.... That kind of wirework shows up everywhere from Portugal to China. The style on these screams Eastern Mediterranean though.
