Around 1935, when my mother was a child, her aunt moved to Arizona and sent her the 3 "rugs" shown below. They are all very similar, but the colorways are slightly different. Each measures about 22" wide x 48" long.

All have been stored in a cedar chest, unused, ever since, so the colors are still very bright, and there is no damage anywhere on them.

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to tell me anything about these. I've had them for about 9 or 10 years myself, ever since Mom gave me the cedar chest they were stored in (where they have remained...)

    Thanks very much!

    Thanks, Messi!

Due to the fringe, I figured they weren't NA, but I wasn't sure what they were...

They're not quite my style, in any case (and apparently not my Mom's, either!) but they sure are colorful!

    Thanks again.

Hi, Sue (big waves back at you - tho NOT the kind you had in your pool! Glad you survived that earthquake okay... I was thinking about you when I heard about it.)

Table runner? Mexican? Hmmm... could be (???) - honestly, I don't have a clue! I sort of assumed that "Aunt Christina" (native of Brooklyn, NY, transplanted for a brief couple of years to Arizona) bought them locally, but of course, even then, they could have been Mexican... I'm wondering if there's anything about the fringe that distinguishes them, one way or the other(?) Probably not, I guess.

I just know that Mom had saved them all these years, and if I have to save them, too (!), I should probably know what they are!

Having completed the great downsizing & move of 2014, I know I shouldn't be hanging on to things I don't even like very much, but hey, if between Mom & me, we've kept them for almost 80 years already, who am I to get rid of them now, right?

Glad the move went well, C! I really don't know anything about these but I'm being lazy today and was googling around. Messi could very well be right!

Look at the google images in the links I posted...patterns, macrame fringe? The way the colors fade in and out, the colors of the Mexican flag on the ends???

I know my Mom still has the quilt tops one of my great grandmothers basted together for each one of us 5 kids, still in the bottom drawer of her bedroom chest..At least I think she does. What a waste for over 50 years! I can't even thread a bobbin right and my Mom hasn't sewn in 30 years. Oh, well...

    Hi Sue,
Check around the retirement communities. We have two residents that finish quilts. Their eyes can not do the tops anymore but love hand doing the tops to the backing. One of the gals loves doing Xs & Os quilting designs in one inch squares.

Yes, these are Mexican Saltillos, named for the region of Mexico where this design pattern originated. They are characterized by a series of brightly colored stripes or bands, usually with a central diamond shape.

The way the fringe is finished off on both ends, with a net-like knotting, is also a characteristic of a Saltillo. Plus, unlike Hispanic New Mexican Chimayo weavings, the warp on Saltillos is made from cotton yarn. Chimayo rugs have a wool warp.

Well, thanks for the detailed reply, Taupou - it's good to know for sure!

I will put a little note with the info about Mexican Saltillos in the cedar chest, so that when MY kids find these in there, they'll know what they are!

Thanks again, Messi & Sue, for your input, too!

    all the best,
