Should I alter my cocktail cabinet?

Hi, I've recently bought an old cocktail cabinet - i'm not sure when it's from exactly but it does have one of those old round prong plugs to power an internal light. Can anyone advise on whether modernising the plug is a good idea (as in will the cabinet be safe to use reg. fires, and would it add/lose value?)

Since the cord may be old cloth covered rubber, now hardened or perished, it is advisable to remove and replace the whole cord right through to the interior light. It will have no effect on the value of the cocktail cabinet.

Thanks for the quick replies The cord is actually wire covered in plastic so I think I should just be fine changing the plug - quickly swapped it over to have a check and it's all fully working! Salvaged this from the tip for £6 today so not a bad deal I don't think!

None of the cord covering is cracking anywhere? Not stiff?

 

Looks in great condition - no marks or cracks on the cord and moves freely when twisted etc Do you think it might be 40's? The only hint of an age that I can see is the old plug and maybe the etchings on the glass?

 

Good! Just keep an eye on it and if it's questionable, lose it! Not worth chancing. I do suggest you replace it with a new fabric covered one in an apropos color. They are available.
If you buy it by the foot you can custom fit it to the outlet distance.
I have used electric waffle/skillet ones too. I just cut off the other end. I'm watching for one now for a clock.

Uhmmm, wow. You scored. The wood on that is absolutely gorgeous. It doesn't look old enough to "need" a fabric-wrapped cord, but I would keep an eye on that plastic one just in case.

 

Nice bar ! Id say 1940's , but Brad is the date man . Are those stirrers at the top original ? Could be bakelite . Just replace the cord for your own piece of mind , its not hard nor expensive .

 

Very cool ...... and a wonderful salvage find! Graphics inside say 50s, which would be consistent with a rubberized or plastic power cord.

 

Why would anyone toss that out....I't's charming..
