A customer wants me to sell this for him. One of my best friends wants to buy it - he will be keeping it, not buying for resale.
The chalice is 9" tall, the base is 6" across, the cup is 3 3/4" across the top. It weighs 1 pound 11 ounces. It is marked Made by H.P. Farrell N.Y.C. 339A, 925/1000 STERLING and there is an inscription in French. It was presented to a priest by his brother on the occasion of his ordination, in memory of their father.
The platen is marked GORHAM STERLING 2137. It measures 6" across and weighs 6 ounces.

I've looked at the completeds on ebay - I'm still unsure about what exactly buyers are looking at and paying for.

I'm trying to come up with a fair price for the seller and the buyer.

I'd say the seller would be lucky to get much over metal value whereas the buyer would pay twice metal value. There should be space for a profit for you inbetween the figures.

The inscription would make the item less desirable, and it is fairly modern. Metal value is about 50c. per gram. Ounces are not usually used unless you specify what kind of ounces they are.

Just doing the maths in my head it looks about $500 in metal.

Personally I'd buy it for $600 and sell it for $800, fair enough to both with a drink in it for me.

Someone had money in 1933 !!!

Because the writing is all underneath , and it's more than just a trophy....I don't think the value would dip because of it , and because it's got a great design ...I'd add a little $$$...to AF's valuing ..!

The inscription says it was given by one brother in honor of the brother's ordination, in memory of their father. In this case the inscription doesn't hurt it since it's underneath and gives the history of the piece. The Gorham name is a plus in the United States. Scrap is only about $400 at the moment. It's worth more than that but how much...dunno....
