Just my 2 cents - factory made c.1960s during the Colonial revival period.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

The figures seem painted on as opposed to woven in, right?
Is it just me... I can't get an idea of the whole thing... maybe a more distant shot, please? Is it just that wide, flat surface in first picture?

    EDIT

I read "basket", not BLANKET! Nevermind!

It looks hand made to me. Something along the lines of filet crochet technique.

It looks like it's worked from both sides and the stitches of white brought up from the back.

I looked in my crochet books. This is called a charted pattern.

    +1

But I couldn't believe the patience and ability it would take to make that!!!

Yes - very good call! My wife's mother crotchets and she said the exact same thing.

I have a good bit of experience with crocheting and I must say that the edge of the blanket says it is machine made. I'm not talking about the applied binding edge but the top edge. Dead giveaway. Also in crochet, the stitches take on a sort of V formation that I don't see here. Take a closer look at it. Also the binding is applied with a machine made zig zag or blanket stitch. Machine looms would not have any problem using multiple colors in a blanket, the sides are bound to cover up the raw edges. I would date it to the 60's or so, given the design and color used. Both popular in that era, especially with the bicentennial coming up in '76.

I agree, not handmade. Funny though, I think there is a term for these blankets and I looked last night and could not for the life of me remember the term, so indeed could not find a similar blanket. Although I know they are out there.

Adding my two cents. I think the design appears to be painted on, or printed.
In the close-up showing the birds head, the white areas do not seem to follow any of the stitches in the fabric; they just cut across them. And looking at the back, it appears that the dark-colored areas have bled onto the back a bit, but the back of the dark areas is still mostly white; that would be hard to do with crochet stitches.
I'd think it would be possible to poke at it a bit to figure out if there were crocheted stitches made from white yarn, joined to crocheted areas made of dark yarn. But I seem to see areas where the threads are dark on the front, and light on the back. That would indicate a painted or printed material, if the same thread is dark on one side and light on the other, as opposed to being stitched from the front with one color and from the back with another color. I'd think that would be pretty easy to detect by close examination.
My guess would be that the darker areas are printed onto a piece of white fabric.

I believe all fakes is correct about the color differences. I know what she is referring to and I believe it is called stamped on color. You will see the same stamping on printed tablecloths, etc. We always called this type of blanket/weave a "thermal" blanket. Don't know why.

PS, I'm a "he." Just to confuse you, we have another AF, afantiques; also a He.
But I'm not offended. Gender on the board is often not obvious in the posts, though one can specify it in the member profile.

So sorry! I'm sure I was being biased thinking of you as "she". It was the subject matter, not giving credit that a "he" would have a valid opinion on the "gender specific" subject of a blanket. LOL

Maybe resist dyed? The pattern applied with something like wax, and then the cloth dyed, leaving the pattern white?

Possibly, but I think that would have dyed the back of the fabric also.
I'm thinking this was a simple printing process, the golden color printed onto the front. I'm not familiar enough with printed fabric to know how the machinery is set up though.
