Went to a friends house yesterday, they live on what used to be a Finnish farm. Dug this out of the ground. Any clues?

I can only speculate on what it is>>>
    ~
It may be a grate but seems odd it would have one area wider.
    ~
That cross shaped piece flips over and goes right there at the bottom.
The short piece is likely the rest of that one not the left edge.
    ~
It may also be a vehicle/tractor part or a safety cover for a piece of machinery whereby one could view a mechanism of some type.
    ~
I'd put it in my 'pallet' of standby materials for my assemblages. :)

I did wonder if it hinged in the crease we seem to see horizontally at the top, as it appears here, but I thought that even as large as it is, being cast iron as it seems to be, it could never take that abuse and load. There would also be mounting holes in it elsewhere I should think.

Finnish as in Finland or Finnish as in owners were originally from Finland? I only ask as things in Finland might be different than what's available elsewhere.

It's so hard to tell what something might have been when parts are missing. It almost looks like the portion shown at the top could have had a corresponding piece attached on the other end. So a grate makes sense but how about something like a step for machinery or a vehicle?

Of course it could be anything from a plant shelf to an oven part or who knows. Maybe someone will recognize it:)

Am I making this up, wasn't there a piece sort of like this here awhile back?

A step is a great idea and should certainly have had a support of some kind for cast iron is brittle and not very resistant to abuse, not resilient and so won't bend.

Mostly I was talking to myself:) Sometimes I think I remember something and am so far off it's not even funny. Then there are the things I should remember and am totally blank so I guess it balances out (in a scary sort of way:inpain:)

Yep Finnish. The area is pretty big. There were some chicken coops, a sauna, a well and a bottle dump. Yesterday 2 others dug out a long water pump.

I've tried to find some photos of old cook stoves to see what they have for shelves. All I find are solid flat ones. I suspect those were to keep things warm as they were connected to the stove in some fashion to conduct heat.
However... I could see the use of such as this to allow things to cool and not put them on another surface to damage/burn it.
