Cheryl, rides to the rescue again! So the mark of a bell or Dutch maid my vivid imagination came up with is a crowned lion's head, and there are initials in the center!! I had come across hallmarks of Newcastle with the turrets, lion passant, and a crowned lion, but couldn't make out the crowned lion on these markings. Like Bake, I wondered about the lack of a monarch's head.

Konan, here are John Langland's maker's marks:

So ...... does the reworking of this older cup harm value? I find this to be a fascinating phenomenon that I have run across before. While I understand the desire to make something fit modern tastes, the disrespect to the original workmanship seems out of character for someone who values his own work. Also, why would there not be another set of hallmarks for the new work?

No new hallmarking needed if no new metal added. Even if new bits were added the rule was often ignored.

It's a job of work, most people can't afford to turn one down.

In general clobbering reduces the value of the old item considerably. The exception seems to be berry spoons which are plain (usually Georgian) tablespoons embossed with a berry design.
