    Hi,
I'm trying to find out who made this brooch. It is 2" x 1". I've been searching for figure 8 brooches but not finding any, so maybe the construction of the piece will id it.
    Any information appreciated.
    Thanks for looking.

I think it is amethyst stone and for me metal is Gold filled or Gold Plated and it looks like European. Did you try to look for hallmark with magnifying glass? Maybe it is Gold Plated Sterling... Though I had Vintage Copa Collection Buckle with Amethyst was made from brass. I am sure very soon here will be professionals who will tell you more about your brooch. amethyst-druze.jpg

I doubt it's amethyst stones. I think Austrian or Bohemian crystal set in brass. with that construction, might be just pre WW2.

Oh! I just got that your brooch is made in "Infinity" shape. I don't think somebody will do "Infinity" brooch just with crystals or glass, because this shape is very special. Flowers, butterflies or just ornate design - yes.

Ownedbybear, would you call this "Brass & Glass?"

Is the name Brass & Glass reserved for Art Nouveau through Art Deco?

Based on the back, it looks like it could be an older piece. It reminds me of older American brass jewelry I've had, like Pomerantz?

    It's very pretty, CX!

Vintage "Brass & Glass" brooches in current condition with "gray-green" tone brass, I even can't call it patina, but this one is very "goldish" with NO any patina or discoloration. :wideyed::shy:

It's not quite an infinity shape as the loops have definite ends.

    Maybe vermeil? or gold plate?

Brass doesn't always tarnish or oxidize... it has a nice, warm color.

But what are you thinking, Wanttoknow?

At the beginning I wrote that for me it looks like gold plated. Back of brooch looks for me "good quality".... how we say home "beefy". But of course it is hard to guess by picture.

Can you test it with a magnet? brass is supposed to magnetic...

If it was plated, then I would expect to see a stamp - that's a more expensive, labor intensive process and a manufacturer would want that known, to show quality.

"Beefy" I agree - it has a sturdy look to it, but that's partly why I wonder it it's not older. Newer jewelry used less and less metal for settings.

I think evelyb and ownedby know more than I!

Thanks for all the replies folks:)
No mark anywhere. I cleaned this up before taking photos, it was very dirty, had lots of green around the prongs on the stones but looks quite nice now. I like the term 'beefy' - I agree this one is. No attraction with a magnet.

Silver or gold will not turn green.
    Brass can.

cxgirl, are some of the stones/rhinestones actually different shades of purple, from pale to deep, dark and rich purple? Or is that just the way the sun is hitting them?

Hi Cluttered - Some articles on testing the differences between brass, bronze and copper mention possible slight magnetic "interaction" with a very strong magnet, that's why I wrote 'supposed.'

It probably wasn't even worth mentioning, because the test involves using a very strong and not very handy Neodymium magnet. It works with brass that contains some ferrous materials - IOW, not pure brass.

Here's a bunch of people debating the magnetic qualities of brass.
    What would make Brass magnetic?

    Don't mean to confuse anyone...

Brass doesn't always green or tarnish too much, although that would glow nicely with a Sunshine cloth. I've not actually come across the term brass and glass here. ;) Those brooches are often very well made indeed and sturdy - it's why so many survive I think. If it weren't for the rollover clasp, I'd say 1920s or 30s.

    There's that :) thanks!

I'd never heard of Brass & Glass, until someone named a piece I was trying to price such. If I find it, I'll upload it, but mine didn't have a strong Art Nouveau or Art Deco look - that's why I asked.

A lot of it is quite beautiful!
