Thanks for taking a look. Not sure what it is. It measures 9" x 22" wide. The brass rail stands 10" high in the center. I think the bottom is oak. It's got 4 brass ball feet.

    Thanks again...Dale

Looks modernish to me and I suspect it might haved been made for a series work. Sets of books in other words.

Hi, thanks for replying. I didn't think it looked too old either.

Maybe to hold logs by a fireplace?

Hi. I think it's too small for logs. It's only 9" wide. Thanks for the help.

Logs shed bits of bark, dirt and bugs.

Thats why you have a basket or box, so you can throw the detritus on the fire or outside, depending on how you feel about the bugs.

I favour releasing them into the wild. :)

Don't know what it was made for but it looks like it would be good for holding trays and platters length-wise on a shelf, rather than have them stick out into the room.

Hmm, I missed the size thing, and of course you're right this is too small for logs.

Maybe to hold newspapers and/or magazines?

Not all firewood holders are enclosed... I've seen many that aren't at all, for instance...

I thnk they can be divided in to fancy schmacy frilly pantcy holders for logs that have been prepolished to complement the ceremonial fireplace, probably somewhere in California, and a working log holder for real fires.

Maybe logs standing on end. Maybe not. I do like the tray storage idea.

According to the dimensions I saw for the NY Times before they downsized it, this is approximately what it would have looked like sitting in the holder...

Luv the headline there. "Rain of Ruin." That's pretty catchy, I plan to put it away to visit upon my adversaries when appropriate. Hard act to follow but one more R word upfront would probably have sealed it in with "Forescore and seven..." and some others. "I am NOT a crook" (Tricky Dicky) "I did NOT have sex with that woman" (Slick Willie.) Lessee, "You will Regret the Rain of Ruin." nah. "Remember the Rain of Ruin." nah. Revisit the... nah. Return to the ... Reiterate the... Revile the... nah too hard to use "You'll be doin', the Rain of Ruin" sung to the tune of...well Idunno so I guess it'll have to be a rap song. Can ya tell it is past my bedtime?

I've not seen a book rack such as this, nor a log holder or stick holder for that matter. However, I might consider a bar bottle caddy.

Hmm, a bottle rack for a bar makes sense!

That was my first thought -- and I am just here now for the first time. Matched bottles with sterling labels... I think it would go nicely with my antique wooden and galleried tray. :)
