I think it is an oriental (factory painting) shipped over.

Likely to be a Lowchen breed of dog. Don’t see many around but that’s the style of coat they have.

"My sense is that it is advanced student copy of a work from the period portrayed. Even Picasso painted copies of the Old Masters as a way of working on his skills.

It feels like this sort of thing to me:"

Yes, to me too, that is the 'look' that tips me off to 1990s oriental import.
Danyana, I had no idea orientals were doing such fine painting! ;) Until I paid an ebay seller $900 for one that was a copy of an obscure 1950s painting. They even used 1950s canvas to paint on. :jawdrop: I am a bit more wary of this genre of oil paintings now... :(

I'm not saying it's not beautiful and the oriental people who paint these (copies) are highly skilled painters. By their customs, it's not "technically" a fake. By our customs, it is. The one I was burned on was more beautifully painted in a more colorful pallet, than the original.

I should mention, without finding an original source for your painting, you will never know if it is a copy or an original. I am unable to use tineye, but there are members here who are able to do a search by the painting image, so you may be able to find yours by that method. Best wishes and welcome to Antiquers forum. :cat:

I also suspect it is newer rather than older and see several anomalies. The satiny shine of her dress is beautifully painted, but perspective is way out. A few close-ups might have been good -- and of course if you love it that is all that matters.

I've spent the last 10 minutes trying to do the same - thank you!

Aside - I'm not even convinced this is a painting after looking more closely at the edges of the canvas. Could be a giclee or similar type print. If OP could provide some higher resolution images of both the painting and the areas where the image stops on the canvas, we might all have a clearer idea of what we're dealing with here.
