I found this and paid paper money (aka too much if it's a repro) for it. How old is it?

I trusted myself enough to buy it after comparing it to the other frame I showed here earlier (https://www.antiquers.com/threads/a-mystery-frame-help.8915/) that @verybrad said to be from the turn of the century. This one looks identical in the way it's been made. But is it really that old?

Can you tell if those miters were hand cut or sliced by a blade cutter?

Unfortunately I'm not that knowledgeable at the moment :dead:

Maybe someone else can tell based on the pictures.

A saw would be rough. I closed in on it and it seems to be roughly cut.
    That doesn't help us.
If it was sliced then that would be newer.
Have to wait for others. :)

based on the pics i have no reason to believe this frame is older than the 1980;s..

The 4 pieces are attached to each other with long nails from the corners, same as the other frame I referred to.

I think most frames from At Least early 1980s forward exhibit two or three different kind of techniques: both which I can't describe because I don't know the terminology.

I don't think it is quite as old as the other one but have no qualms about this being circa 1920. Victorian frames had more depth to them as in your first frame. 20th century frames tend to be flatter. Of course I am sure that there are exceptions to this but it generally holds true.

You could describe this as an ebonized with gold leaf.

The question I have is would early frames have been on Redwood, which is what this appears to be, rather than a hardwood?

    If so, 1890s-19teens.

    Maybe Fir?

I think it is pine that has darkened a bit rather than redwood. Pine was use as the base for gesso covered frames way back.

    Thanks @verybrad and @clutteredcloset49

I just noticed another thing that might (or might not) effect the evaluation:

I don't really know how long (or when) this type of nails were common, picture:

Oh, and @KingofThings the frame is relatively light in weight. The timber is not terribly heavy or hard.

I don't think those nails are all that old though they could've been replaced. Not the type of nail to be used for this. This is a 'framing' type nail.

If I recall correctly Fir is pretty light. I had a lot in my 1914 Craftsman farmhouse.

I'm thinking the frame was coming apart (as by the filler seen by and in the miter gaps) that someone used newer nails to hold it together - those nails probably can't be used to determine age. IMO.
