Gold Acid Testing

    Brought this ring to a pawn shop. It is marked 10k and the guy said right away it is not solid as low karats would be more bright, or something like that
    Then he did an acid test and said something about the color it should turn into but I did not quite get it. Don't know if he used 10k acid or higher.
    Can someone explain, when testing 10k with acid, what the result should be?

    10K would not be bright. Obviously you can see the copper in his hack job.

    The most precise acid test would be to compare its dissolve rate on a streak on a stone to a known karat sample.

    The result should not be lots of green bubbles.

    My acid testing kit shows no affect on gold down to around 6ct.
    If the item is not gold the acid reacts with the metal turning green/grey/black and sometimes bubbles depending on the metal.
    From the photo`s shown that looks plated and should not have left a stain.

    I still don't get it. So the acid should not leave any mark on plated gold? Like not change color at all?
    I guess I need to find pictures online to get a better idea.

    14K test acid should not affect 24K plate. Thus the need to scratch the surface.

    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    Was it necessary to take a divot out of the ring???? I'd be ticked off!!!! And what are the little notches in each side of the zero of the 10??? Would you get a better or more honest report from a jeweler??
