    Happy Holidays everyone!

does anyone happen to know anything about these? The label would have you believe they are English. They appear to be the French Regence style. The person I got them from believed they were from ca. 1910... I can’t find any online with a similar label etc.

    Thanks!

The label says “Superior Quality Chessmen Eighteen Pence per set”

Wouldn’t 18 pence actually be cheaper than expected for 1910? Could it be earlier?

Can't see the label in your photograph. Would you be kind enough to post a close-up?

And who knew there was a style of chess pieces called French Régence? (Not I.)

Does it seem to me or the knight has slightly different colour in its upper part? Are you sure that particular part is wooden?

18 pence would have been 1 and 6 or one Shilling and Sixpence, about right for something like that back then.

theyre definitely wood.. the white pieces are a lighter weight and have the lead in the bottom... the black pieces are heavier with no lead weight

My reading of the label does not say "per set" but rather "per 8ct."

I guess my eyesight is working less well than it should be, because there's no way to divide 18 chess men by 8.

It’s faded there but it is set. I had to lower the image resolution so I could get it to post here.

    It's maybe for 8 boxes?

Ummmm, just to set the record straight - each player has 16 pieces not 18. ;)

In 1811 there was an 18 Pence coin, or rather a bank token issued due to a coinage shortage.
    It was silver.
In 1811 that would have been a lot of money.

Is the set worth anything? Potential age?

    c. 1910 is as good a guess as any. Mass produced. Inexpensive in their time.

There are collectors of antique chess sets. This would appeal to a novice collector.
