Thanks to all those who welcomed me so courteously and kindly encouraged me after I shared a true story of loss. I have deleted my original message as I can't handle insensitive banter from other members.

Dude, just consider the past experiences a very expensive learning curve, we've all had those hard-learned lessons and if anything good comes out of it at all, it's that you didn't give up and now are better equipped to recognize quality when you see it and if you are not sure, you are smart enough to avail yourself of the wealth of knowledge here.

we wouldn't have been any help in 2008.. we didn't exist ! :playful::playful::playful:

    But yer not alone.....
I had a collection worth several hundred thousand fall in my lap , & called upon an expert for help that I thought I could trust...but he took over the deal and brought in a bigger expert whom I could not trust . It spiraled out of my control, & I got used.......& the collection was gone.
I was told the seller went elsewhere, & we lost the deal.....but sometime later I saw a catalog from that 'bigger expert', and sure enuf....there were several of the artworks photographed there.

I've edited my initial response. I've heard enough negativity over the past several years on the rare occasions I share my story with others. Thanks again to those who were kind in responses.

    I'd rather not
Exactly why I have not spoken to many people about this. People making jokes, accusing me of lying or being mentally off, or saying things like, "no one's that stupid" and whatnot. For almost every amazing antique find, someone else got burned. I just so happened to experience it on a grand scale. What's worse, I did it to myself by not doing my due diligence.

We're all had a case of the stupids at some point; it's part of the gig.

Ya, people can be brutal when it comes to busting balls. But, when it's a sensitive spot like this, you can only take so much.

It's unfortunate, but the reality is, we all screw up. Gotta move on.

I am so sorry you got reactions like that. I am sure those people aren't perfect either, and make mistakes just like the rest of us. Some of their mistakes are bound to have been stupid, senseless, whatever. That is being human for you.
Anyway, any questions, just ask. We will try to help to the best of our ability. And some of our knowledge is based on having to learn the hard way, from stupid mistakes.;)

Welcome to the forums! Sorry to hear about your experiences. I think things like this happen more frequently then many think. In the antiques business there is a whole food chain of dealers buying items, marking them up and selling them to other dealers where the process is repeated. It is impossible to be an expert in all areas and occasionally stuff is missed and someone gets a huge score. Sorry this had to be at your expense, pretty sure this happens to most of us avid collectors although at a lesser scale. I sold something at a yard sale for a few dollars that was spotted by a picker and ended up at a local auction house selling for a few hundred dollars.

If you are ever able to tell your story I'm sure many here would love to hear it.

Your initial post was too dicey not to have had me (or Ghopper or anyone) ask the obvious question - what was the collection? Sorry if you thought I sounded insensitive, I'm not. All you had to say, was, "watches" or "dishes" or whatever. I just wanted the general category.
