Hoping Nippon collectors can offer some assistance.

I don't think I've ever had a set as nice as this one, though I haven't had a lot of Nippon. Each piece is in perfect condition, heavily gilded with little rounded dabs of paint that look like cabochons.

Can someone give me some help in describing the work on the set? I don't know what to call the dabs or the raised gold decoration that sort of swags between them.

    Thank you for your help!

Beautiful! I think the right term for the applied bits might be "moriage"?

If it were mine - well that's not a good start - if it were mine they'd have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands but...I think I would title it something like Beautiful Nippon Game Bird Set - Maple Leaf Mark - Raised (or Heavy) Gold and Enamel Decor. The pictures should do the rest of the work. Somewhere in the description I think I'd mention that it rivals anything Limoges was putting out about the same time. Some might consider that keyword spamming but it would expand the pool of folks who actually see it and IMHO it's true. It truly is an exceptional set!

    Hi,
They are not moriage but just raised enamel dots. They are just drop dead gorgeous. Are you going to list them on ebay? Drop me a line if you do.
    Thanks,

Thank you all so much for the compliments on the set. I don't think this is moriage, but oh my, it IS drop dead gorgeous.

I just happened on this set. An old friend had taken an elderly woman to an antique mall to sell some silver to another friend of mine who sells there. I was walking by, and my silver seller friend asked me to take a look at the plates (she doesn't sell porcelain or glass). The lady had the platter and 3 plates. I was interested (to put it mildly), but cautious because of only 3 plates. So I made her an offer, which she took. She said she had some other things to sell, so I gave her my phone number. She called me an hour later and mentioned she had an additional plate to the set. When I went to pick it up, there were 3 more. Yay!

Greg, I'm going to sell the set online but not on Ebay. Trouble is, I've no idea how to price the set since I can't find anything comparable in Nippon. I've looked at google images, other sites, nothing like this anywhere that I can find.

Now to ID the birds. Are they all pheasants? 1 has the same ring neck pheasant that's on the platter, 4 are the same with the bird having a beard, and 1 has 2 birds.

Very pretty set. Heavy Gilt Gold over red ground, Raised Enamel, Jeweled. And if so, make very clear the center scene is completely hand painted, not decals or mixation. Sometimes "cake icing" is used but your pieces are too refined for that term.

I would keep in contact with her.
She may actually find the other six plates.

Notice you have 4 plates of one bird, and 1 each of two other birds. One matching the platter.

    Absolutely Gorgeous! ! !

I like what Don said about the listing.

The centers are probably decals, don't you think?

No, the scenes are hand painted. No dots, and you see very fine brush strokes if you look with a magnifying glass.

One thing I just noticed, though: 3 of the plates with the same bearded bird are marked with the wreath mark, but they're green. They're identical to the blue. I don't know if that means anything.

Beautiful set!! I sold several gorgeous pieces of Nippon for a friend who inherited quite a collection. Use "ornate gold encrusted heavy gold beading" in your title and description. Unfortunately, moriage has become a word that is misused but accepted. I do see it used with moriage gold beading. Some people might search for the moriage term even though it really isn't correct so I would slip that in. I sold those pieces several years ago and I don't know if the pricing would still apply but the plates sold for over $100 each, the highest was $185. A large ornate platter sold for $425.

Measure the mark . I just read the mark should only be a 1/4 inch high if genuine , the fakes are 1/2 an inch high . And they came in either green or blue , so I don't think that's a biggie .

Make sure you mention the color of the Maple Leaf mark. It does make a difference to some collectors. I would also call this heavy gold encrusting.

I just noticed the four plates that match, don't actually match the platter, or the other two plates.

Do the plates measure the same?
Look at the placement of the medallions on the border.
Look at the red borders there is a difference in the width, as well as the placement of the gold.

Look at the gold edge. On the two individual plates, do they also have the beading that the platter has?(platter is the top right. One of the four matching on the bottom left.) See the difference?

Notice the two individual plates seem to match the platter. Are the marks the same color on these three, but not on the other four?

Pretty set, but as already suggested, the centers appear to be transfers with perhaps some hand-painted accents - very unlikely that hand-painted scenes would be virtually identical as on these...

Like the others, a gorgeous set! Probably dates between 1891 to 1921.

"In 1921, the official country of origin name requirement was changed to "Japan", thus creating a defined time period 1891-1921 in which wares were marked Nippon. Previous to 1891, items were either not marked at all, or marked with Japanese characters."

THis site has the mark, but talks only about it being in blue, green & magenta. It has the 1/4" info Johnny gave. No doubt it is Johnny's source.

I collected Nippon for years and finally ran out of room and had to sell something. Looking at these makes me want to start collecting again!
