I saw this paper print in a thrift shop and was drawn to it but I'd like to find out more about it before buying. It is framed and matted under glass. Framed size is 31.5" x 25.5", mat opening is 23" x 17". No signature, number, or any other info is visible which leads me to believe the mat may be covering part of the image -- or maybe not? The back is covered with plain brown paper.

The seller knows nothing about the item but I found out through internet research that the subject is John Mytton with his dogs and is from the mid 1800s. Christie's auction house sold a print of this in 2006 for $555 USD and they listed the full title as "John Mytton Esq., on a chestnut hunter, with his hounds, in an extensive landscape, published by W.Smith, 1841."

Is there a way to at least attempt to discern the era this was printed and therefore its approximate value, before I make an offer?

Just the framing suggests that this is a recent repro. You want to look at it very closely with a magnifying glass. If you see a regular pattern of dots, then it's probably modern.

Agree that this has all the earmarks of being a modern decorator print.

Yes, I was thinking that about the frame too... it's very obviously modern, but I was holding out hope that perhaps someone had re-framed an old print to suit their tastes. I'll have to try to get back there and go over the image more closely, as when I first saw it I had no idea what to look for.
