    Hello,

I would like some help with this chair, if possible. It is French (south?) and was given to my mother with the comment "it is a good one" but nothing else. I guess the style is a marquise but am not sure when it dates from thought it may have some deco styling. It needs a little bit of consolidation but this requires getting behind the upholstery and I wonder if this should be re-done. The upholstery is a little worn on the seat (with contributions to wear from cats claws) and may be original. Some of the linear inlay on the legs and arms is missing and I intend to replace this but before diving in would like to know what I am dealing with!

    Thanks, Colin

Think a bit earlier than Deco period. Maybe about 1910. Have not heard of the use of the term Marquis as a furniture style so don't get the reference. If English, it would be considered Edwardian. Not sure the upholstery is original. The use of gimp edging as seen here is usually seen in later upholstery. It is an interesting chair and probably worth fixing up if doing so for yourself.

Very pretty chair! Does the underside have a dust cover or can you see the construction of the frame?

Edit - Typing while Brad was replying. Listen to him!

I did wonder about the Gimp edging too but do not have the knowledge yet to opine...

I thought a Marquise was a type of bergère (closed arms) in which the arms sweep down in a curve but I see there are various definitions.

There is a dust cover which I have peeked behind where tacks have come loose. It is sprung and the springs look ok. The webbing needs to be redone in parts but I have not had a good look at the construction yet. I think a bit of a plan is required before tackling it!

I see the reference but think it is really more classical.

I think it's a transitional piece. I also see some Art Nouveau going on. It's too florid to be considered Edwardian, but French tends towards excess.
