Hi, this is a small box, about 3 1/4 inches wide and less than 1/2 inch tall. It has a hammered surface, Asian character mark on the underside, and 2 beautiful round marks on the inside of the lid.

I don't know if it is solid silver or silverplated. I did a test scratching the edge on a stone, and the scratch disappeared and came up white with 18k acid. So it has some silver content, but could be just heavily plated.

I have seen a few similar boxes on-line call bonbonniere boxes, or toothpick boxes and they seem to be from Japan. Do you think this was for candy, toothpicks, or what?

Does anyone recognize any of the marks, or have any idea about age and origin? Any info appreciated. Thank you!

The mark reads "Pure Silver Made by Hattori."

    K. Hattori was a famous Tokyo silvershop.
