OK, aqui. That does it for me.

Hopefully I'll see all of you tomorrow. Do be careful crossing the street.

MY MOTHER SAID THAT TO ME EVERY SINGLE DAY WHEN I LEFT FOR SCHOOL.

YOU NOW KNOW WHY I WAS POSITIVE I WOULD NEVER SEE MY 21st BIRTHDAY.

Thanks again Fig, yes it's out of the frame, and the coloring seems to go all the way to the edges. It is on some type of thin board with an adhered paper layer (or layers) on top. I've looked under a loop at the coloring and still can't figure anything out..:sour:.
Here are a few more pics, and another of the eye area. There is some spotting and that's what I was attempting to clean when I first removed it from the frame, until I realized it wasn't a print:eek:.

Thanks for the close-up’s. Changes my view and comments on the left eye. Not perfect symmetry, but close enough. But it does enforce my original opinion. I know zip, zero, nada about the techniques you are discussing to produce the finished product. But something made me think that there was significant touch up. His face is too smooth.

I’m guessing the subject is in his late teens to early twenties. Most likely bi-racial male, not in his own clothing. The hat doesn’t fit right and I’m now inclined to think it maybe wasn’t even in the photo, but added later. Take a good look over his left ear at the “shadow” and how that continues all the way to his left side, but unevenly. Maybe added? Yes, his dark hair may be showing, but still seems not quite realistic.

Even if I’m wrong on the age and he’s only 16, he would still have SOME evidence of facial hair. Seems that the pic was heavily “powdered” to conceal that. Not make up before, but after.

Biggest question to me is not how made, but why If I was photographing this sharp, good looking kid, I would have done several shots and hope to hell none looked like this one. Unless the whole plan was to portray an African American kid out of his comfort zone.

Finally, if it is a drawing from scratch, it is very well done. If a modified photo, still good, interesting. My guess on age is 1990 to 2000. Based on the jacket lapels and cut. Wish the lapel went lower, and am very open to correction on date opinion

Haha, nothing under there that I know of, it just appears to be in the drawing itself?:zombie::wideyed::D

Oldguy, once again you are delightfully observant! Great questions, and I too agree that if this was done from scratch, it is well done. But I sort of disagree on the time frame, not that I am an expert.....far from it, LOL! But it just seems to me that the paper on the back of the frame was much more aged than from the 1990's, but again, I don't know. Just typing out loud! Also, I don't see anything else made like this that is from the 90's? Thanks again for your great explanations and help.:)

If that is the original frame and I think it is.
That frame is pre WWII. As is the way the picture was backed with corrugated cardboard.

Yes, too different opinions, based on totally different observations. And we're both willing to give in. As far as mine goes I'm 100% willing to concede. In case no one else noticed :D men's fashions change every thousand years or so. Unlike women's which changes 4 times a year.
If just based on the width of ties from 1900 to 2015 there aren't many choices. It's either 2 inches wide, 4, or 6 inches. So it can be 3 - radical change - for 19 months and then revert to 2 or 4. So, guys, save the old ones. They'll be back in vogue before you know it.

As far as the guy in the photo, he could have sat for that shot anytime between 1940 and 2015. For skinny ties without the ascot knot, 1950s on are the best bet. But the hat begs 30s 40s.

I give up on the date based on fashion. Someone else take over, please.

How about an artistic, neutral, observant, helpful, pleasant, thorough young lady with time to spare???????????????

    GILA, where are youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu?

No problem!!! All we need to know is when he/she's jacket, hat and slim tie (not windsor knot) were in vogue. Gender not important.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Okay, I will put my Minor in Fashion on the line and say... 1920s-40s. Those goofy hats were big, down South and out West at least, in those decades, and my intuition (and the frame) tell me it's older than 1950.
Fantasy back story? It's a chick who saw Marlene Dietrich "manning up" and decided to try it. It stirred new and scary feelings in her, and she's worried about her eternal soul, or worse, her Mother seeing this picture. Things were stuffy back then.

OK, G. Check the wide brim dress hat. Should have no creases, no brim turned down.
    Check lapels and cut out.
Check width of tie and style of knot.

A typical choice of a young man in 1900.
    It doesn't mention cross dressers.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

imagesHP87E57H.jpg imagesHP87E57H.jpg Dude, I am totally not seeing the biracial thing in our boy. GIRL.
Also, our PERSON's hat's crown/top is rounded-er than the above, giving it the 20-40s goofy look to me.
This hat is 1930 high-crown fedora. Our person hasn't turned the brim down.

    EDIT
Or here's a nice homberg from the 40s...

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

I think it's coincidental that he looks smooth and feminine because the colorist just did a poor job with details. I think it's a photo that's been colorized.

Thanks Bev, I appreciate your thoughts. I disagree about the poor job though. I'm pretty sure whatever this is....is supposed to look this way, BWDIK?? But hey I'm always open to all opinions, and really appreciate them.
Cowardly walking away, cause I bow to you all, and love learning from you, and I'm sorry I disagree.:cat:

    Are you leaving us??
If you disagree with a few comments that's perfectly acceptable, but I hope you have not taken any of them as personal. I, among others, can get pretty down and dirty at times, but not with any mean intentions towards another member.
Hope to see you again soon here or in other conversations.
I still think HE :)p Gila :D) might be bi-racial partly because of the coloring.
