Trying to find more detail on this. Victorian or 20th century repro? Love the feet!! Can’t see any marks or stamps aside from the US patent number on the bottom...

Not Victorian. The internet says that patent number dates to 1934.

The patent number would date your music box to the 1930s.

The patent number search comes back with: 7-30-35, for a method of producing a decorative surface on metal. Sounds right to me. . .I have my Grandmother's musical powder box that she got towards the end of The Great Depression. Mine however is in much better shape than yours.

Thanks everyone for the information. I’m new to patent searches. Wiscbirddog congrats on your superior piece!

The patent number gives you a date that is the oldest the box could be. There is no guarantee it was made then. Pretty sure I have seen similar that are quite new.

The scene is Orpheus leading Eurydice out of Hades, Cupid ahead with his torch.

The patent was for the way the metal was worked to create a decoration.

My piece has a medallion with flowers on it and has nothing to do with the patent.

These powder boxes are made of aluminum, very soft (ding easily) and are prone to corrosion/pitting.

Ditto from me too. I should have been more clear that StumptownJoe's box could not be Victorian with that patent date.

The decoration on the top of the box is an inset porcelain plaque that would have been bought separately from the maker, who may or may not have been the same one who made the plate. Age of plate not really relevant to dating box. As has been stated, the patent has nothing to do with this part of the decoration.
