Featured My Third (and largest!) Aide Memoire

Each one has the days of the week printed on the leaves. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (no Sunday, because good Christian men and women would attend church on Sunday and not make plans or reservations, and therefore, no need to take notes!).

 

Impressive!

 

So, what would you write on them with that would have been non-permanent?

 

Grease pen, maybe? A crayon-sort of thing?
Is the ivory sealed in some way?

A pencil so it could be erased. Usually I see them with a pencil attached.

Older pencils had softer leads so you could write on stuff like this.

But yes, you write on them in pencil, and then erase them later with a damp cloth.

These are Aide de Memoires - memory aids - you wrote reminders on them of what you had to do each week.

I've been waiting to buy this one for MONTHS from a chap who deals regularly at the market. He finally had a sale today, and I was able to buy it.

So I'm a pack-mule now, am I? *Waaaaaaah!!*

I have bought some pretty big stuff at flea markets over the years. Writing boxes, typewriters, sewing machines...a solid steel strongbox! (that was a challenge to get home!), and a vintage clothes valet.

I've always wanted a full-sized aide memoire (That up there, is about as big as they get), but the prices on them are hideously expensive!!

I saw one at the market, once, which was around the same price I paid for this one (which is about as cheap as they get, which is still fairly expensive), and I almost considered getting it, when I saw this big chip in the corner. And I was like: "NO!"

I wasn't going to pay *that much money!* for something that isn't *PERFECT*.

So I held out...and waited...and waited...and WAITED...for about a year! Until this one finally went on sale, and I was able to justify buying it.
