So, I picked up this Cane chair and sofa today for what I'm thinking was a steal. This is my first purchase of this type of furniture, so I'm kind of needing help dating it and getting a general idea of the value. The backing is weaved and all the decor is hand carved. I have more pics available but they are too large to upload.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

If you can manage to send and then download photos by Yahoo email, it gives you an easy sizing option (choose "small") and they upload readily here. Plenty of furniture brainiacs here!

Not enough to go on here with the one picture. From what I can see, the quality looks good.

What are you looking for exactly?

We need photos of the entire piece - so you can see the whole thing at once, and a photo of the underside.

Someone had reupholstered it and added cloth to the underside. But I'll post them.

the upholstery is hideous in my mind, but it was the wood I bought it for in the first place so it's all good. As far as the bottom goes it has backing on it.

Wow! I really LIKE the material! Have never seen upholstery that replicates caning before!! Like the furniture too. :)

I think this is probably a modern import and the upholstery may be original. There are several reasons I think this. The quality of the carving, while on the surface looks pretty good, there is some roughness to the deeper background areas in the carving. I also have not seen flowers quite like those on old Western pieces of a similar type. The wood appears to be a tropical hardwood and the finish appears modern and sprayed on. Lastly, the caning is of the press-in type that would not be present on an old piece.

These bear the look of a 20s-30s French inspired living room set but the details do not match for the age. I am thinking it is no more than 35 years old. It was probably fairly expensive when new but is just used furniture at this point.
