Chinese Scholar Stone?

    Greetings! I think this family heirloom is a Chinese scholar stone-meant to be kept on desk for contemplation...? I know it was purchased in Beijing 40 years ago. No markings on bottom. I don't know age or stone type-but it is definitely soft and very prone to cracks-had to repair a small piece . Anyone have experience/background on these type items? Thanks!

    It's malachite. Small compared to other scholars stones I have seen, but those were chosen for museum displays, so maybe there were minis as well.

    This translates to soft & breaks easily:

    Cleavage Perfect in one direction. Fair in a second direction.
    Mohs Hardness 3.5 to 4.0
