Could this be real? Could it be stolen? Where would I even start? Monet

With all that being said I personally think it is most likely a fake. :)

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Truthfully, I had no idea what the scene was supposed to represent in Kasper's 'painting', UNTIL I saw Komo's Original of Monet's scene!!! WOW!!!! I am NO art critic, but IMHO, someone is feeding you a huge pile of Texas Longhorn 'bull', Kaspers!!! (however, for you....I would wish it WERE real!!!).....those owners aren't THAT stupid to have a Monet in their possession and NOT 1. have any documentation, or 2. have it authenticated themselves by one of the major Art Houses!!!!!!! Their story just doesn't 'smell' right.............to me:bored::bored:

Edit: Besides, the brush strokes look all wrong to me as well as the colors!

I would tell them to take it to a major auction house. Let them know that, as intriguing as it is, it is outside your realm of expertise. You could always offer to broker it for a percentage fee and do the legwork for them but you might be barking up a tree that is not worth your time and effort.

Could it be a quick study ? Something he just threw together ? I don't think its real either , but stranger things have happened .

    Something he just threw together.....?

    "
Some artists in this show paint The Manneporte from a distance, or use it as a backdrop for objects or people on a foreground beach. Not Monet; he got up close and personal, hiking right up to the bottom of the arch through a cliff tunnel at low tide with a gaggle of local kids in tow lugging his half-dozen unfinished canvasses."

Does this sound like a guy who just threw stuff together.....I think not 1

This was one of nearly twenty views of the beach at Étretat and the spectacular rock formations such as the Porte d’Aval, Porte d’Amont and the Manneporte which rise upwards on along the coastline that Monet painted.
Just quoting from someone's blog, but are there 20 versions?

This below is not from a museum, so I don't really know where it derives from, but does have a different feel closer to the one K's been offered.

That is really intriguing. I just don't know. I have been looking around and have found work of his that was more like the one I have pictures of. It definitely makes me wonder. I think at this time what I will do is just tell this client that she would need to have it authenticated. That if she can get an expert to verify that it is indeed a real Monet and have it documented then we can talk about it but without some sort of documentation there is really no way that I can help her. Unless of course she wants to sell it for $100 to desperate_fun. LOL. ;-)

A good part of me believes this to be some sort of scam or fraud. I mean common sense would tell me that. Normally that is absolutely the way I would feel but after the things I have seen over the past few weeks I have to be honest I don't think there is much that could surprise me anymore.

I mean remember a couple of weeks ago a person handed me a pretty valuable wine collection just, here ya go, have fun with it, I am moving and not going to have room for it. Huh? That seemed too good to be true but it was.

I have had all kinds of people call me with all kinds of unbelievable items and I have definitely learned that a lot of people are truly certifiably crazy! I don't know why or where this stuff is coming from but somehow they are finding me and contacting me. I live a pretty modest life. I don't have a lot of money. I don't rub elbows with the rich. What little money I do have is going into this auction gallery right now and believe me I am scared to death of what is going to happen with it. Although, these crazy things keep coming up. These deals of a lifetime. I feel as though I am on one of those shows and at any moment someone is going to pop out with a camera and say hahaha we got you. If it wasn't for such a crazy past couple of months I would not believe this for a minuet but after what I have seen I really just don't know anymore. Anything is possible. I have learned that. LOL! I hope this lucky streak continues that's all I really know. LOL! I am going to ride this train until it stops that's for sure.

If the client goes and does the work to get it authenticated and it turns out to be real I will let you know. Until then I will just assume it is some sort of hoax. I know there are a lot of frauds in the art world. If I happen to find out that it is a fraud I will let you know that too. ;-)

I knew someone who's mother had permission to sit in an art gallery (one of the big ones in Washington DC) and paint copies or her version of famous painting. My friend had lots of Master looking paintings all over her house that her mom had done. I don't remember if she signed them or if she did whos's name she used.

I wonder it it's something like that.

Someone found a reference to six versions of this theme - the other paintings from Étretat will be different subjects.
If Monet painted six versions of this scene, the color palette for each of the six will differ. His point in doing multiple paintings was to show how colors change according to time of day, weather conditions, etc.

I think trying to get this authenticated would be a waste of time and money.

I was weeding through what the group found, what I was finding myself, skimming the thread - and missing the fact stated by the Museum - there are six of the same view.

But there's never been any mention of one missing!

Interesting comparison, Scouts. Good you posted a photo of it here, I was unable to open the link for, perhaps, a larger view.
