I would greatly appreciate any info on this globe with book in base. Thank you.

Is the book an atlas and does the globe have a publisher on it?

I am rather intrigued by there being a book in a "sleeve" under the globe.

Can the book be removed from the base?

If so, what is the title (and date) of the book?

Does the book in any way relate to that particular globe?

Is it an instruction book about that globe or about globes in general?

Or is it perhaps about geography in general terms?

Anundverkaufen, two minds . . . I was busy composing my questions while you were getting down to brass tacks, so to speak. ;) :D

I have vague memory of this set coming with an encyclopedia set, probably a false memory, I probably saw one sitting on top of an encyclopedia shelf set.

Toward the bottom of the globe I am seeing a large bird (of some sort) above a drawn ribbon(?) with what looks like writing on the ribbon.

Then below that are three "pillars" (for lack of a more descriptive word).
I'm wondering if those are meant to represent "pillars of knowledge"????

I really am curious now about the maker of the globe. I do notice that the word "ocean" is spelled in English.

Why do people take horrible pictures into the light when they could be half decent pictures with the light behind them?

I found this to be an interesting website to date items (perhaps not just globes) by the name of country.

I'm sorry my photos are not good enough. I will make sure to not use this site anymore. I am a graphic designer so I know the importance of good quality images... But this is what I have to work with as I had to go thru and take photos quickly with an iPad. This site is so snobby!

Alc, I am sorry that you feel that way, especially because you did receive an answer to your inquiry. See verybrad's response with answer(s) to your question at #8 above (within 3 hours of when you posted it, I might add).

I hope you won't dismiss this forum out of hand. I enjoyed seeing your interesting globe and finding out some useful information which I did not know before. ;)

As much as I agree with AF, I would hardly call the Antiquers site snobby. You haven't seen REAL antiques snobs like I have. And trust me, they'll horrify you, when you do.

That said, decent photos are necessary. You can't expect us to be able to help you identify an item if we can't see everything that you can. It's impossible to do so.

You are posting interesting items, but a LOT of them all at once. To expect us to miraculously identify everything based on one dark photo is unrealistic. You know, we aren't getting paid to do this. Most of us have day jobs and we're here because we like antiques and we like to see what other folks have. Seeing details on an item is the only way we can really help. Otherwise, Google is your friend and you can do the research yourself. This is a group of people who are doing the googling for FREE for you so you don't have to spend hours yourself. Be polite and thankful that you have us.

AF was just asking a question. Poorly lit, grainy photographs will not help anyone get an id. I tried to use Photoshop to enhance your photographs to see if that would help. The photographs are too dark and grainy to see any details. Enlarging them only made the graininess worse.

In the future, even if you are in hurry, take the time to turn something away from the back lighting and you should be able to get a decent photo. Nobody is being snobby, they just can't ID what they can't see.
