Older charm bracelet - base metal -

Any way to brighten up these charms?
I have no idea what they are made of, but it sure isn't silver!

 

I suspect the are similar to pewter. Try a pewter cleaning recipe. If they have zinc in the mix they may not clean up but only get worse with cleaning.

 

Oh dear. Well, I will just try a teeny area with a Q-Tip or something.

Hi Messi,
I had to laugh with Terry's remark. When I was kid I used liquid mercury to make this type of metal real shiny. Just dip it in wait a minute and did not even have to rinse. The stuff was a miracle. Later the metal would fall into pieces. I played with that stuff for years, perhaps that is why I have no intact brain cells now. if they have nickel in them it will turn your wrist green and then you can have them chromed.

What I did was to use something I had forgotten I had.
Sunshine Jewelry Cleaner.
It didn't exactly shine them up, but it did get all the dirt and gunk off them, so they at least look clean (and better!).

 

Part of this is no doubt the lighting, as you can see by the chain (which I did not clean), but here is before . . .

I'm only good at it after my second or third scotch.

 

I have used a pencil eraser on non precious metal jewelry and most of the time the grime is erased away.

 

I've used a sunshine cloth on non-precious metals sometimes with good results.

Looks like it shined up good with the cleaner though!

 

Yeah, the Sunshine liquid is pretty good stuff.

I'm going to try the eraser thing though that Shiloh suggested, if I can find one in the house that isn't all hard and nasty.

A kneaded eraser might work since it's flexible and could be pushed into crevices.
