Out of my price range but I keep going back to look at it.
What's going on here? Any idea what language that is and what it means?
    Just curious. :shy:

German, I think. Can't see enough words clearly to really get a feel for it.

Sure looks like someone's being Christened a queen???? Is it some sort of Keltic??? The section I blew up looks like it says something to the effect of '"Wunderking Keltic & G-something'!!! AND that's one boatload of handwork!!

The one word I think I see accurately & in its entirety is 'gelobt', German for 'praise'.

And I thought I was reading Wunderking but felt unsure because modern German for 'king' is 'König'. Think more likely to be an epithet for Jesus or God, not the crowned figure in the embroidery.

Unlikely. I see that word as starting 'be'. Suspect the phrase will add up to Praise be to God.

I don't see anyone in the scene who looks like clergy, which seems odd. And what in the world is in his hand? Ruling out rope & a braid of her hair, I'm going with a lulav.

A palm frond used in celebrations of the Jewish holiday Sukkot. We've had etrog boxes turn up here from time to time. :)

Looks braided & my initial impression was rope, reinforced by what appears to be a knot by his hand, but here seems to be used in a way similar to a sword in a knight dubbing. I know there are all kinds of clues in addition to the words, e.g., what I think are lilies in the lower right corner & the plant that looks like a dandelion below the kneeling lady, but I can't read them. Got lost for 10 mins in the idea of an alchemical wedding.

Makes me think of Henry VIII sentencing one of his wives. The one on her knees has a rope around her neck and is praying. The man to the right is holding a sword. The 3 women to the right look like ladies in waiting and look distressed.

I don't think this is a happy scene.

Thanks for the efforts, everyone! I love old handwork. If anyone has a spare $625 burning a whole in his/her pocket, the seller has it listed on eBoo. (And there's a few more photos.)

I had that thought at first too. The guy standing just back of the 'rope' really reminds me of Henry. Clothing is that period.

That doesn't look like a coronation to me. Looks more like a sentencing of some kind.
