    Hi,
I have this cup, made by Mappin Bros London 1898 with a medallion? for the coronation of King Edward VII dated June 26 1902 but it didn't take place until Aug 1902. The cup is 2 1/2"H x 3" across the top, the medallion is 2"W. I'm not sure if this would be considered a medallion or what.
So how does a cup made in 1898 have a medallion that was made in 1902 in the bottom of the cup?
Would this have been a souvenir piece?
    any information appreciated.
    thanks for looking.

Someone had a box of 4 year old unsold silver cups in a warehouse. The coronation came along and the "medals" could be soldered to a hole cut into the cup.An inspired jeweler probably made a good profit on the novelty.

So, the cup was pre-made (using new-old-stock) and sold, before the expected date of the big day, which ended up being postponed. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it, LOL.)
That is the prettiest bottom of a silver cup, I've ever seen, by the way.

Yes, it is a pretty piece! I have some other pieces of silver that came with this, they are engraved June 1902 but not sure if they are to do with the coronation. I'll post them tomorrow when the light is better.

Edward became king in January 1901, when his mother Queen Victoria died. The coronation was set for June, 1902, but the king fell ill with appendicitis and an immediate operation was recommended. It was a success, and after a month's recovery, the coronation was rescheduled. That's the whole thing in a nutshell.

But I agree with the general consensus - leftover cups set with coronation medallions to sell off old stock or some such thing.

Not left over or old stock, at the time to have stock for several years was the norm rather than an exception. Clearance sales are modern.

If it's for the Coronation of Edward VII, why does it say God Save the Queen on the reverse?

Ah... I guess it says God Save the King across from that.

And it also says God Save The King on the left of that medallion too - just harder to see.

I can tell you that stuff like this isn't rare (although this one might be, I'm not entirely sure).

I have seen examples before of silver coins being set into the bottoms of plates/bowls. One was a 1901 Shilling or sixpence (I forget which...Sixpence I think) with Queen Victoria on it. Another was a silver bowl with a coin with King Edward VII on it (but you couldn't read the other side so I wasn't sure what coin it was. My guess is a shilling).

Wow, thanks for that link MOS! I wasn't able to find another of these. I wonder if mine is silver? I can't see the edge but I assume this is by Mappin Bros also.
Shangas, I don't think this is rare but it is something I've never seen before and probably won't see again:)
I seem to recall someone posted a ladle with a coin set in it.

    Hi CXG,

Your cup is certainly silver, and I'll wager that the medallion is also silver.
