I bought this over 30 years ago and didn't know I still had it but found it tucked away. I don't think it's anything very special but I've been wondering what it says. The most obvious would be if it says something gondolier but I'm not sure it does. Any ideas?

The image is 5½" X 7½" and the sig is in pencil.

I see something like Baisgonshier. I can find not listings under that name. I do find listings under Boisgontier but that looks pretty clearly to have an H in there.

I am finding a lot of etchings with this signature attributed to Henri Boisgontier. Here is his signature on a painting. Clearly no H in it and I aee some similarity but don't really see a match. Of course a signature on an oil painting might not match one on a print exactly.

I have found a few listings that include the H in the spelling but still attribute it to Henri. I am not convinced they are one and the same. Neither Artprice nor Askart makes mention of him as a printmaker. He died in 1940 or 1920 depending on source. Does your print seem old enough? There is a Georges Boisgontier (b. 1930) listed as a printmaker but, again, no H in the signature.

I can't figure out the spelling difference either and it's hard to know if all the attributed pieces online are just repeating wrong information or if someone actually knows.

I don't remember exactly where I got it other than an antique shop and it looked old then I'm thinking 35 years ago or so. It's yellowed and a bit brittle. It was in a frame (no idea if I still have that), red I think, that had peeling paint and was old and ratty. I'm guessing the glass may have broken and that may be why it's tucked in a folder. Just one of those things I'd forgotten about.

    I can't NOT see that H, yeah...

    A good mystery.
