Cabinet/Nightstand Question, please...

While displaying my collection of bird (wine) corks in another thread, I received some comments and questions about the table/cabinet where they "live". That made me curious about it.

I know this: it was purchased in Cleveland in about 1980. Is it older? I have been told it is burl wood. I never considered it very attractive, but reactions here have interested me. Is it a nice example? Are there other descriptors that apply? These forums have caused me to get curious about things I formerly ignored!

I think it was new when it was purchased...and I have that cookbook around somewhere! The veneer is burl wood of some kind. I have a feeling Brad would like that.

 

I wonder if this is what my mother called a "Po" table? Not sure if it should be Po or Poe. She decided to engage a decorator to help her pick out furniture and fabrics (upholstery and drapes) for the living room in the late 70's/early 80's. The selections included 2 end tables with storage underneath of this same enclosed type.

I think it's what was called a "drum table" due to the shape.

Yep, DRUM TABLE... My Mom has one. The finish is different from yours, but the shape/style is the same....

Agree, pretty new. Wood looks like it could be white ash burl but could be one of any number of lighter woods. .

This is an example of cherry... cherry matched the shades best of the woods I saw...
Hmmmmmmmmm...

 

Too light for cherry and burl cherry is not commercially produced in veneers.

 

So you don't think this is spalted?

 

The only place I see evidence of spalting is at the very bottom where you can see some overly dark grain.
